The 1991 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 convertible marked a highly anticipated return for the iconic Z28 badge, which had been absent from the Camaro lineup since 1988. This model year launched early because Chevrolet officially terminated its support for the International Race of Champions (IROC) series at the end of 1990, replacing the popular IROC-Z with the revived Z28.
The 1991 convertibles are particularly notable for their structural history and relative rarity. The factory did not build these as true convertibles from the ground up; instead, American Sunroof Corporation (ASC) modified T-top coupes shipped directly from General Motors to complete the open-top transformation.
In 1991 there were a total of 100,838 Camaros built and of that number only 3,203 convertible Z28's were made.
• Engine: The standard heartbeat of the Z28 convertible was the 5.0-liter (305 cu in) LB9 Tuned Port Injection (TPI) V8 engine. It pushed out roughly 210 horsepower in its stock configuration. (Note: The larger 5.7-liter 350 TPI V8 engine was restricted to the hardtop coupe variants due to structural rigidity concerns with the convertible frame).
• Transmission: Available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic with overdrive. Manual configurations are highly sought after by collectors, as only approximately 3,000 five-speed convertibles were produced for the 1991 model year.
• Chassis & Handling: To accommodate the aggressive V8 power, the Z28 package featured a performance suspension with heavy-duty front and rear stabilizer bars, stiffer chassis bracing, and an upgraded 7-ply steering joint to maximize rag-joint stiffness and handling precision over base models.
